Vulnerability

So often we avoid vulnerability or see it as a weakness.  Showing true vulnerability requires great courage.  Just being "you", trusting you are enough in your perfectly imperfect humanness is a step towards personal authenticity, liberation and an acceptance of  your place in our shared common humanity.  In fact, it is the beating heart of compassion.

​This painting is my raised right hand asserting that we all exist and wish to connect with each other.  However, the hand is in danger of slipping into the cold water beneath as it feels the fear of expressing a simple need.  Expressing our needs, clinical or otherwise, is part of vulnerability.   

The connection we nurture in overcoming our fears of rejection, judgement and criticism in expressing our needs is vital for us to flourish.  At our peril do we only meet the needs of others.  This painting is symbolic of the courage we all show in this pursuit of balance.

White Out (between the worlds) 

​I still remember as a child watching the television after all the programmes for the night had finished and the screen would just show the black and white flicker of snow.  I would still watch it in some kind of trance without any cognitive thought.  

This painting is my take on that human condition where from time to time we zone out and find ourselves in that not unfamiliar state of dissociation.  Between worlds and beyond colour.  We may go round and around in our minds ruminating without even being conscious of the subject matter upon which we are thinking and sometimes we are not thinking anything at all!

​It was a bold choice to paint this, particularly as I love colour but in the frame by QED it is a stunning piece which captures something we can all relate to.  Very contemporary and very relevant.  Highly textured and painted in thick oil applied with a palette knife.

Lovingly Intertwined 

When lovingly Intertwined in mind, body and spirit all parts can truly touch to the extent the union of two really does become one.  Limbs entangle and explore, thoughts can be expressed without words and a sense of wellbeing, belonging and heartfelt vulnerability descends.

This painting represents what many of us seek, an authentic connection, tender intimacy, mutual acceptance and deep loving friendship.  The softness of the palette suggests the warmth, trust and safeness where one can become truly lovingly intertwined.

Optimism

Using a limited palette of Michael Harding oil paints I wanted to paint the sensation, or put another way, the felt sense of looking out to sea from the cliffs of Devon and Cornwall at the sunrise and sunset.  The green blues of the sea married harmoniously with the yellow reds of the sun.  (Really must be seen to appreciate the vibrancy and texture of the colours).

Whichever coastline is nearest to you it is hard not too feel a little happier with life and even optimistic when breathing in the beauty of Creation.  There is something restorative and reassuring about the reliability of the tides of the oceans and the setting and rising of the sun.  

A new day brings us an opportunity to make an new intention.   This work reminds us that we can choose the "light touch" of optimism to accompany us everyday.

Resilience

To date, this is my only mixed media piece. 

This work is made up of 76 words.  The threat based emotions and feelings are in Red.  Compassion based values are in Green (the complementary colour).  Only one word, Resilience, is in Blue.  Resilience is the bridge we must cross countless times a day to save ourselves from living permanently in a mind-set of suffering.  

Our tricky mind with the evolutionary conflict brought about by the thinking brain of our frontal cortex sitting uncomfortably with our old reptilian brain causes us to embrace resilience as one of the key skills of living a valued driven life, hard as the human condition is.  

If you look carefully you will see PTSD appearing 11 times in Black representing the thread woven throughout my emotional landscape.  This work will particularly resonate with anyone who has PTSD or has experienced life changing trauma. 

However, I am confident we can all relate to the emotions and feelings illustrated here.  Resilience is our Fulcrum.  We can bounce back.  We can respond.  We can tip the balance back in out favour.  

​This work has taken me well over 300 hours to complete.
